The high-altitude glacial valley with a length of 4.0 km and an area of 6.5 km², is located in the Tatra National Park, at an altitude of about 1625-1900 m a.s.l. Mieczysław Klimaszewski believes that it is "a suspended and unrejuvenated section of the Pliocene valley". The valley's landscape is made up of granite peaks of the High Tatras, extensive plains, debris of large boulders, scarps, shimmering lake surfaces, grasslands and dwarf mountain pine. The glacier carved a large sickle-shaped bottom in the valley with the tops facing northwest (towards Świnica) and northeast (towards Świstowa Czuba). There are several glacial lakes in the valley with a total area of 61 ha. The largest of them is the Great Polish Pond located at an altitude of 1665 m a.s.l. (31.14 ha, depth 79.3 m). Other lakes are: Zadni Staw Polski, Czarny Staw Polski, Mały Staw Polski, Przedni Staw Polski and Wole Oko. The last pond is a periodic lake and smaller than the others, which is why the name of the valley includes only the 5 largest lakes. Formerly the valley was grazed, it was part of the Hall of Five Ponds. The Tatra Society had already bought the area of this hall from the highlanders before the Second World War (it bought a 24% share). In 1956, TPN reduced grazing, and in the years 1963–65 through the purchase or expropriation of the entire valley became the property of TPN, which liquidated herding here. Cows were grazing until 1968.
